About By the Pound

Located at 1952 S Industrial Hwy, Ann Arbor, MI 48104, By the Pound operates as an asian grocery store serving Ann Arbor in Michigan. This page gathers the practical details people usually look for before visiting: where it is, how to reach it, when it opens and how customers rate it. Besides its main category, the business also describes itself as spice store, so it may cover more than the name suggests.

Asian grocery stores and supermarkets stock ingredients, snacks and household goods that general American supermarkets often do not carry, organized by category rather than by country of origin in most stores. Produce and live or fresh seafood sections are usually at the back or side of the store, and weekend mornings bring the largest crowds and freshest restock. Many larger Asian supermarkets include a hot deli or food court counter selling prepared meals by the pound or as fixed plates, useful for a quick lunch while shopping. Labels are frequently bilingual or untranslated, so store staff can usually help locate a specific ingredient if you ask. Cash, cards and mobile pay are all commonly accepted at larger chains; smaller specialty shops may be cash-preferred.

Hours are published for 7 days a week. On most of those days it is open 9 am–6 pm. Hours in the United States do change around federal holidays and long weekends, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. You can reach By the Pound at (734) 665-8884; calling is usually the quickest way to ask about availability, prices or directions. Its website is facebook.com, where you may find menus, price lists or booking options.

Customers rate it 4.8 out of 5 on Google across 476 reviews, placing it among the better-regarded asian grocery stores in Ann Arbor.

kinda cool place, but I bought this millet 2 weeks ago and almost cooked some today. Luckily I saw before I opened it that it has creatures living in it already. Other things I bought were fine, good spices, etc. It's simply hard to know, in such stores, which products have just been sitting too long. I'll go back to buying packaged stuff

I've been shopping at By the Pound for almost 10 years and now get all my pantry staples here. Maple syrup? Dark chocolate chips? Olive oil? Chopped walnuts? Bowtie pasta? They've got it all, in the quantity you want, for a fair price. The staff is sweet and helpful, the store is always bustling and clean, and I recommend them to everyone who moves to Ann Arbor or Ypsilanti.

Local gem, they have a lot of fun snacks as well as pantry staples. Great way to try new things without committing to a whole package. Surprisingly good place to get holiday gifts as they sell fun packaging- so for example cute printed tins and cellophane bags to put chocolate covered cherries/nuts/etc in. Tons of fun sprinkles and baking decorations around the holidays.

I drive hanging hour just to come here monthly & refill my containers. I originally found this store by searching "zero waste," but it's so much more than just that. BTP promotes zero waste, by the by-products are incredibly cheap AND incredibly high-quality products. The coffee we get is so divine I can't even get coffee ANYWHERE else without being disappointed. My ridiculously picky daughter drinks their apricot tea by the gallon, & I buy them out almost every time. The staples here are to die for: milk chocolate wafers, vanilla, molasses, & olive oil are so worth the drive. They seem more expensive, but that's only because the prices are "by the pound," hence the name, so they really aren't. Even if they WERE more expensive, I WOULD spend my hard earned money on these items, simply because the quality is there. The obviously cheaper staples, like flour & sugar, are so great because I can just fill up my container with the quantity I have used since my last BTP run, so I'm only paying for what I use & need. Zero waste is huge in this store. Even though it's not the biggest priority in my home, every little bit helps, & I try when I can. BTP makes this so easy.

This place has just about everything you could or would need, just show up. Oh you like better health this place takes it a step forward, raw loose teas, raw ingredients like, oil, any type of rice, polenta, chia seeds, nuts, spices, candies, chocolates, sugar, salts, grains, truly a chefs kiss and a hidden gem in the Ann Arbor landscape! If you have a request they will most likely have it if you require a certain health tea or medicines for ones health journey! They have just about a piece of everything!! Either bring your own container, or use one provided, you can even bring items fit others to use (such an opted sustainibility concept to reduce waste) just measure take what you need and clean up your mess n the rest if history, i always love coming here!
